LEBAI MALANG - FOLKTALE IN ENGLISH

LEBAI MALANG

 

            Lebai Malang is a well-known folktale from West Sumatra. This story tells about a religious teacher or Lebai who got two party invitations, from The Upstream Village and from The Downstream Village. Those parties were held at the same time and the same day.

            But, he confused to choose which party to be visited.

            “Hmm, which party should I attend? Is it Upstream Village or Downstream Village?” He asked himself. “If I attend the party in The Upstream Village, the host will give me two buffalo heads. But, I don’t know the host well. Moreover, Upstream people can’t cook as good as The Downstream people.”

            “But, if I attend the party in The Downstream Village, I well get a buffalo head which is well-cooked. And, I know the host very well! But, if I go there, I won’t get any pastries! Instead, the host in The Upstream Village will give me some pastries.”

            Because he was busy thinking, he didn’t notice that time was running out. Until he got on his boat and paddled the boat through the stream, he had not made up his mind yet.

            First, he went to The Upstream Village. In the middle of his way, he changed his mind! He took a detour to The Downstream Village. When he almost arrived, he saw some guests who want to go to The Downstream. “Well hello my friend! Are you on your way to The Downstream Village party?” One of them asked.

            “Certainly, my friend. Are you guys too?” Asked Lebai.

            “Well yes! But, I heard their buffalo is very skinny.”

            Hearing this, he went back to The Upstream Village! When he arrived in the village, the guests were  about to go home, the party was over! He turned to The Downstream Village as fast as he could. Unfortunately, the party in The Downstream Village was also over. He could not had the buffalo head as he wished.

            At that time, he was very hungry. His stomach growled, “I’m so hungry.” Then, he decided to go fishing. For the purpose, he brought a lunchbox filled with rice and a dog with him. After waiting for a long time, a fish ate his fishing bait. But, the bait was stucked in the floor of the river! He jumped down to get the fish. Unfortunately, the fish escaped. When he went up, he saw his dog was eating his rice. Because of these misfortunes, he was called as “Lebai Malang”.

            How unfortunate he is…. We don’t want to be like Lebai, do we?  Thus, let’s start to be better each day. Be grateful, be decisive, and last but not least, be confident with your own choice and don’t be greedy.

Raden Harjuna enggal- enggal nyuwun pamit, nungka lampahipun Raden Suryaputra. Wonten ing margi saged pinanggih kaliyan Raden Suryaputra. Sanjata Kunta kasuwun dening Raden Harjuna...

  A Journey to Trust Oleh Dela Ayu Wahyuning Hastuti | X IPS 1     Embusan angin siang mengibarkan Sang Saka Merah Putih dengan eloknya di angkasa, di atasnya kupu-kupu terbang tanpa ragu seolah percaya kepada kedua kekuatan sayapnya yang tak akan membiarkannya terjatuh. Kemudian, hinggaplah dia pada mahkota bunga mawar yang hidup di antara taman. Pernah mendengar simbiosis mutualisme? Ya, materi kelas lima Sekolah Dasar, yang artinya merupakan interaksi antarmakhluk hidup yang saling menguntungkan. Seperti, hubungan antara kupu-kupu dengan bunga. Kupu-kupu mendapat keuntungan karena memperoleh madu dan nektar dari bunga sementara bunga mendapat keuntungan karena kupu-kupu membantu proses penyerbukan. Antarmanusia juga sudah seharusnya seperti itu, kan? Hubungan yang tenteram, percaya terhadap satu sama lain, tak ada perasaan merasa dirugikan ketika berteman, serta tak ragu. Namun, memang ada kalanya untuk sampai tahap ‘percaya’ itu sangat sulit, ada saja sesu...
